We're so proud to be partnering with the Agariya community, a tribe that has been working in the salt district of Gujarat, India for generations, to bring you this solar-powered, earth-filtered, and hand-pounded salt. Using solar pumps provided by our local NGO partners, the Agariyas harvest this bright, inland salt from the desert’s underground water table. The salt’s high-mineral content is preserved through a slow-filtration process through the desert soil. In partnership with a local women's self-help group, whose members then hand-pound the salt to the perfect texture for everyday use, we are able to ensure that the salt retains as much flavour as possible. Our salt comes from the famous desert salt pans in the Wild Ass Sanctuary and Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. After Gandhi's Dandi Salt March in 1930, Gujarati salt became a symbol of freedom and an act of nonviolent civil disobedience against the British Empire. We like to think of ours as emblematic of sunshine and freedom alike.

Farm Story

Grown in the historic, rain-fed, sugarcane-growing Daund region, our jaggery is grown and processed by Kantilal Randive, a well-known soil health expert. Our sugarcane is intercropped with dhaincha (sesbania bispinosa), chickpeas, and wheat for soil health. Its juice is clarified using traditional methods — incorporating wild okra to remove the impurities — for a clean, nutty jaggery powder! Use the jaggery to sweeten your cups of chai and haldi doodh, and for other drinks, baked goods, and more! Given that jaggery has a high molasses content (AKA the nutritious brown stuff that is usually pulled out of sugar during the refining process), expect a deep, rich flavor that comes in clutch when you're subbing it in for any sugars.

Hella cocoa butter, baby! Made from Anamalai Estate’s award winning cacao beans, this is a beautiful showcase of the potential of Indian cacao. The fact that these beans are grown on a single estate means that you’re tasting a true expression of terroir i.e. the soil they were planted in, and the seasons they grew through. Your rose petals are organically grown by Parvathi Menon and her wonderful team on a 10 acre farm heaving with an abundance of bananas, limes, avocados and rain-fed turmeric in northern Tamil Nadu. After two years of trial and error, Parvathi finally figured out how to grow the Damask Rose (or Panneer Rose in Tamil), that whilst prized for being incredibly fragrant, is also known to be extremely delicate and very high maintenance, especially when grown regeneratively, without pesticides. Since the rose petals need to be processed everyday when they are perfectly in bloom, Parvathi designed an ingenious solar powered dehydration system that is just gentle enough to help the petals retain their deep colouring and lock in their renowned fragrance. We’ve been grinding small batches into our coffee beans, topping our desserts with these bursts of pink, and even steeping them in cream for a little floral joy in our everyday lives.

Grown by our beloved Kasaraneni family amidst marigolds, bananas, and black rice on their 3rd generation farm. Whilst Mr. Prabhu Kasaraneni’s family has been farming for three generations, he is a self-taught organic farmer who began growing heirloom Pragati turmeric in 2015, with assistance from the Indian Institute of Spice Research. This is the spice Sana started the company with! In search of an heirloom turmeric that was regeneratively grown as well as delicious, she was recommended to Mr. Prahbu Kasareneni by the Indian Institute of Spice Research. Prahbu was a young idealistic farmer, and the only one in his area to start growing regeneratively, which initially brought critique from nearby farmers, until they saw how well he was doing. Today, it is still one of our most well-loved spices, and for good reason—it's delicious!

Jalapeno seasoning is a powerful way to spice up your meals. This versatile blend of dried jalapeno pepper, garlic, onion, and other complementary spices can enhance a variety of dishes with its bold, tangy heat. Whether you're a fan of spicy food or just looking for a way to add some kick to your plant-based meals, jalapeno seasoning can be your go-to kitchen companion.

What is Jalapeno Seasoning?

Jalapeno seasoning is a spice mix made primarily from dried, ground jalapeno peppers. This seasoning also often includes additional ingredients such as garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, and sometimes salt. The resulting blend delivers both heat and a smoky, earthy flavor that can complement a wide range of dishes.

The seasoning typically carries a medium level of heat, making it a versatile option for those who enjoy spice but prefer not to go overboard. It is often used in Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Southwestern cuisines, but can be adapted to other global cuisines as well.

Benefits of Jalapeno Seasoning

1. Rich in Nutrients

Jalapenos, when dried and ground into seasoning, still retain many of their natural nutrients. They are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and capsaicin. Capsaicin is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help boost metabolism.

2. Boosts Metabolism

Capsaicin, found in jalapenos, is known to increase the metabolic rate, which may help with weight management by promoting fat burning.

3. Supports Digestive Health

The heat from jalapenos has been linked to improved digestion. Capsaicin can stimulate digestive enzymes, promote the flow of stomach acids, and reduce symptoms of bloating and indigestion.

4. Boosts Immunity

The vitamin C content in jalapenos helps support a healthy immune system by fighting off harmful free radicals and promoting the production of white blood cells.

Uses of Jalapeno Seasoning

Jalapeno seasoning is an incredibly versatile ingredient. Here are several ideas for how to incorporate it into your meals:

1. Sprinkle Over Roasted Vegetables

Roasting vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, or carrots with a pinch of jalapeno seasoning can add a zesty kick and bring out their natural sweetness.

2. Season Soups and Stews

Add a teaspoon of jalapeno seasoning to your vegetable soups or stews for a spicy, flavorful base. It pairs wonderfully with tomato-based soups, lentil dishes, and even creamy chowders.

3. Season Grains and Rice

Add jalapeno seasoning to cooked grains like quinoa, rice, or couscous. It transforms a simple grain bowl into a mouthwatering meal with just a dash of seasoning.

4. Make a Spicy Dressing

Mix jalapeno seasoning with olive oil, vinegar, and a touch of mustard to create a quick, spicy vinaigrette. This works great on salads or as a dipping sauce for roasted vegetables.

5. Enhance Tacos and Burritos

Incorporate the seasoning into your taco or burrito fillings. It pairs well with beans, guacamole, and roasted veggies, giving your plant-based wraps a zesty flavor boost.

6. Spicy Popcorn

For a quick snack, sprinkle jalapeno seasoning over freshly popped popcorn. This simple recipe brings heat to your snack, making it much more exciting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How Spicy is Jalapeno Seasoning?

Jalapeno seasoning typically has a medium level of heat. The heat from the jalapenos is noticeable, but not overwhelming, making it perfect for those who enjoy spice without the extreme burn. If you prefer more heat, you can always add extra seasoning.

2. Can I Adjust the Spice Level of Jalapeno Seasoning?

Yes! If you prefer a milder spice, you can reduce the amount of jalapeno seasoning you use or combine it with other seasonings like garlic powder or paprika to balance the heat.

3. How Long Does Jalapeno Seasoning Last?

Jalapeno seasoning, when stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, can last up to 6 months. After that, the flavors may start to fade, so it’s best to use it within this timeframe for maximum freshness.

4. Can I Make Jalapeno Seasoning at Home?

Absolutely! To make jalapeno seasoning at home, simply combine dried ground jalapenos with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cumin, and salt. Store the blend in an airtight container and use as needed.

Cooking Tips for Using Jalapeno Seasoning

1. Use Sparingly

Jalapeno seasoning packs a punch, so start by adding a small amount to your dishes. You can always add more to suit your spice preference.

2. Pair with Cooling Ingredients

Since jalapeno seasoning can add heat, it pairs well with cooling ingredients like avocado, coconut milk, or yogurt. These ingredients balance the spice and help tone it down when necessary.

3. Add it Early for Deep Flavor

To fully infuse dishes with the flavor of jalapeno seasoning, add it early in the cooking process. This allows the spices to cook into the dish and provides a deeper, more integrated flavor.

4. Combine with Other Spices

Jalapeno seasoning works well when paired with other spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, or smoked paprika. Experiment with different spice combinations to elevate your dishes.

Seasonal and Holiday Favorites with Jalapeno Seasoning

1. Summer

Jalapeno seasoning shines in summer when it can be used in fresh salads, grilled vegetables, and barbecue sauces. The heat from the seasoning complements the smoky flavors of grilled plant-based dishes.

2. Fall and Winter

As the weather cools, use jalapeno seasoning in stews, hearty soups, and chili. It adds warmth and spice to these comforting dishes, perfect for cozy evenings.

3. Holiday Gatherings

For holiday dinners, consider adding jalapeno seasoning to mashed potatoes, stuffing, or even festive appetizers like roasted nuts. Its bold flavor makes it a crowd-pleaser during celebrations.

The Environmental Impact of Food Waste and Jalapeno Seasoning

1. Reducing Food Waste

One of the benefits of using spice blends like jalapeno seasoning is that it helps reduce food waste. Leftovers from meals can be easily revived with a sprinkle of seasoning, reducing the need to throw away perfectly good food.

2. Long Shelf Life

Jalapeno seasoning, like other dried spices, has a long shelf life when stored properly. This means that it can be kept in your pantry for months, reducing the likelihood of wasting spices due to spoilage.

3. Sustainable Sourcing

If you're concerned about the environmental impact of your food choices, look for jalapeno seasonings made from sustainably sourced ingredients. Some spice companies prioritize eco-friendly farming practices, ensuring that their products contribute to a healthier planet.

Conclusion

Jalapeno seasoning is a flavorful, versatile addition to your pantry that can add bold heat and savory depth to a variety of dishes. From roasted vegetables to soups, salads, and even snacks, this seasoning brings spice and complexity to plant-based meals. Not only does it have health benefits like boosting metabolism and supporting digestion, but it also helps reduce food waste by enhancing leftovers. Whether you’re cooking for yourself or a group, jalapeno seasoning is a must-have for those who love a little heat in their meals.
